This past summer when I was working on the Cavalier book, the summer of 2011, I went to the movies more than I usually do. And by that I mean I went to the actual cinema, instead of just watching a movie at home. So I would sit there through all the trailers before the main film, and you're basically watching these vignettes of scenes that are sequenced together in a way that imply a broader narrative, but without ever revealing the entire story. I realized the book was working in the same way: thirteen photographs that are more or less pieces of cinematic scenes that go together, and suggest a narrative of some sort, but without ever really pinning it down. The book had become the trailer for an imaginary film.
